The South Bank and Waterloo area is home to a major transport hub, national cultural institutions, iconic visitor attractions, major businesses and a growing residential population. Yet, step away from the riverside and you enter a public space which is unconnected, confusing and difficult to navigate. The Waterloo City Square scheme creates the opportunity to radically rethink this complex labyrinth of streets, squares, subways, raised walkways and poorly thought out street design. The area will be transformed. It will become welcoming to pedestrians and commuters, it will improve the everyday lives of residents and it will attract inward investment to the area. Ultimately, it’s about creating the unified, high quality urban realm that the area and its communities deserve. The site takes in the IMAX roundabout and underpasses, goes along Waterloo Road as far south as Lower Marsh/The Cut, and stretches west as far as the junction of York Road and Mepham Street.
